Episode shownotes

Welcome to the new Makers and Doers podcast, a podcast aimed at parents and guardians looking to learn more about giving children opportunities to explore Design - through Making and Doing.

I am your host, Gerry Scullion, a designer and educator based in Ireland who works 100% online training organisations about user experience design and service design to people all over the world.

By way of introducing myself, I’m also the Founder of The Human Centered Design Network and the #1 podcast This is HCD that as of today has been downloaded 840,000 times. We talk with design leaders globally about they use Design and design methods to create better outcomes for people.

What interested me most though these days, is what I learned in School, have nothing to do with what I studied in Uni, and what I studied in Uni, had nothing to do with what I do for a living. In fact, I think at this stage, I have had 3 or 4 careers and I have constantly iterated my way through life.

Without knowing it, I have used the Designers mindset to work and improve how I live my life. This is a raw podcast, that will include interviews with other designers and creatives in the field, early childhood development and we will cover off activities to try out at home, primary education, and also talk about the journey of launching on Makers and Doers to the world.

What role does education have in generating the next generation of problem solvers and lateral thinkers?

What can we do to help equip the next generation to be better placed to test new ideas, to be able to research and understand other perspectives, to learn and get comfortable with uncertainty?

As we all know, life and the world has been through an awful lot in the last number of years.

What got us here, won’t get us there in the future.

We need new ways of thinking - and that is essentially what we will be discussing in this podcast.

My new business, MakersAndDoers.School will be focussed on doing something a little different. It will provide real world classes for children aged 6-10 and also provide stimulating learning content to parents who are signed up to the courses. I want to share my journey of building a business, and would love you to join me along the way. Beyond that, I have no idea, I will iterate and design the business from the ground up and will share updates as I go…
